The voice of reason

Yesterday, as I came out of Costco and was walking back to my car, I was met by a family coming the other way. There were five boys and their worn-out mother. The smallest two of these boys, aged perhaps five and four or so, were trailing behind the others. The smaller one was trying to get away from the older one, and as they passed me the older one stopped. In his hand was a syringe with a needle attached. He dropped his arms to his sides in frustration and called after his little brother, “It could’ve been over already!”
